GEO vs SEO: What's the Difference?

SEO optimizes where your pages rank on a results page; GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) optimizes whether your brand appears inside AI answers. One competes for position, the other competes to be the answer: shared foundations, different judges.

Stacked, not substituted

AI answer visibility (GEO) doesn’t retire SEO. A crawlable site, clean content architecture, and earned authority serve both. The divergence is at the top of the stack: SEO polishes titles and links for sorting; GEO polishes fact density, explicit conclusions, and semantic markup for citation.

A typical migration path for an SEO-mature team:

  1. Baseline: test the major AI assistants with real customer questions; most brands score lower than they expect on the first pass.
  2. Upgrade: restructure existing content for AI: conclusions first, self-contained sections, FAQs, structured data.
  3. Backfill: add the AI-specific plumbing (AI crawler policy, llms.txt, a citable knowledge base).
  4. Monitor: keep the SEO ranking report, add a visibility/citation retest cadence. Two dashboards, one content engine.

The operating question

The search-era question was “when users search this keyword, where do we rank?” The AI-era question is “when users ask this question, do we get named?” Cover both, or concede an entire acquisition channel.

We already do SEO. Do we still need GEO?

Yes. SEO answers 'where do we rank'; AI answer visibility (GEO) answers 'does the AI recommend us.' A growing share of users skip results pages entirely and just take the answer; SEO alone means sitting out that channel. The upside: your SEO assets are GEO's head start, so layering it on costs far less than starting cold.

If we rank #1, won't AI recommend us anyway?

Not reliably. Some AI engines do consult traditional search results when retrieving sources, so ranking helps you get considered. But the model then judges whether your content actually answers the question, whether you're credible, and whether you're quotable. Ranking is an entry ticket, not a guarantee.

Limited budget: SEO first or GEO first?

Follow where your buyers ask. If your category's customers already interrogate AI (high-trust decisions, younger demographics, professional procurement), prioritize AI answer visibility (GEO). If they still live in traditional search, shore up SEO, and knock out the shared-foundation GEO basics (crawlability, structured data, FAQs) at near-zero marginal cost while you're at it.
